What to Wear on a Plane!!

The holidays are behind us for another year! We are probably still cleaning up wrapping paper pieces and tinsel found in corners. Many of you may have flown to your holiday destination and aren't thinking of traveling anytime soon, but.....we have a full year ahead of us. There are lots of plans to make for Spring Break and Summer break and what about the holidays 2018. They will be here before we know it. Hence this blog post. What to wear on a plane. I have flown several times and I think this article is very right in its information. Take a peek....even if you don't have travel plans for awhile. Maybe you can recommend it to a friend.

A Little About Me

Did you know.......

I am from North Dakota...born and raised. I spent most of my life there, married my hubby, and had 4 children there. I was a stay at home mom for more than 10 years. I loved it! Being with my kids was and still is one of the most important things in my life.

Tell me a little sweet tidbit about you? I love to make friends not just clients.

Foto Tip Friday!!! More Tips for Holiday Photography

Sorry I am late with this tip. It was my birthday yesterday and I took the day off. I have also been fighting a cold that has been going around, so I needed the rest. But I promised more tips on holiday photography and here they are.
(If you didn't see last weeks tips, here is the link to see them.)

  1. Be sure to charge your battery and have an SD card that has lots of space. You don't want to have your battery die or your SD card say it's full right in the middle of all the fun.
  2. Put your camera down sometimes and enjoy the fun for yourself. Take some time to be with your family and not just be the one behind the camera.
  3. Give your camera to someone else and let them take some photos. Make sure you are in some of them. It is neat to see photos from someone else's perspective.
  4. If you want to get photos of lights, turn off your flash. Set your shutter speed lower and your aperture and ISO higher and use a tripod. If you are photographing outside, do it 30 minutes after sunset to get the best shots.
Well, there you go. I hope this helps you get photos you love this holiday season. I wish you all the happiest of holidays and new year! God bless!

What's Trending for 2018?

Are you a trendy person? Do you buy the latest and greatest styles no matter the price tag? Or are you more frugal and wear last years trends to save money or buy the knock offs? I am not a trendy person. I like to look nice and wear nice clothes but don't ask me if what I am wearing checks all the boxes of what is in style this year. Lol.

But I looked it up! I have a great article about what is coming in 2018 and what is leaving in 2018. I was a little sad to see some of it, I have to confess. But again I don't keep up with all the trends, so I will keep wearing what I have. hehe

Check out this article and then tell me what you think.

How Do You Celebrate?

The holidays are upon us. Everyone has different ways of celebrating. Like me, for instance, I have always been very different when it comes to Christmas. I was raised in a home that didn't celebrate it and then I married a man who was raised Catholic and did celebrate it. We came up with our own way of celebrating that held both our values in check. How about you? What traditions do you have? How were you brought up? I would love to know. 🎄🎅🤶

Fun Fact! Ok maybe not so fun......

Do you have a photo of your child in your wallet? We don't carry photos around like we used to because of our phones, but we may want to reconsider. Research has shown that if you lose your wallet and have a photo of a baby in it, the chances of your photo being returned is considerably higher. Hmmmm. Something to think about for sure!

Foto Tip Friday!! Taking Photos of you Holiday Celebrations!

Welcome back to Foto Tip Friday! Last week I said I was going to give some tips on taking photos of your holiday celebrations. So, here it is. Today's tips are about camera settings.

  1. Make a list of what photos you want to capture. Such as, gift opening, morning by the tree, everyone eating dinner.....memories such as this are fun to look back on.
  2. Check the white balance on your camera and set it to the appropriate lighting conditions. There are so many beautiful colors and lights this time of the year and you don't want to have them come out too yellow or too blue.
  3. Use a tripod if you have one as well as a fast shutter speed because both of these will help prevent motion blur. There is usually lots of movement and you don't want to miss a shot (especially of children) because it comes out too blurry.
  4. Get lots of close up shots of decorations and food and family. It is so fun to look back on the details of the day. That is where the memories are.
I hope this helps give you some ideas to capture your family together and those decorations that look so bright and beautiful. Check back next week and I will have more!!!

What's in Your Closet?

Do you have a closet full of clothes or just a few pieces? I love clothes. Actually, I went to college for Fashion Merchandising, but then married a farmer in a small town. Almost any career in fashion requires a larger city to find a job that will go anywhere. But I don't regret not going into fashion one bit. I have found that being a photographer is more fulfilling and allows me to be with my family and I use many of the things I learned in college anyway. So, it was worth it.
Back to clothes.....I love clothes. But sometimes it can be overwhelming trying to pick out what to wear. I found this great article that suggests 10 clothing items every woman should have in their closet. Check it out and see how many of them you have already in your closet.

Welcome to My Thanksgiving!!!

Thanksgiving is behind us already. Now on to Christmas......wait...whoa......hold your horses. I don't want Thanksgiving to be over yet. I love Thanksgiving.

What about you? What traditions do you have for Thanksgiving? What did you grow up with? Did you continue the traditions of your family? Let me tell you a little about mine........

Welcome to my Thanksgiving! At my house the day always starts with the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. Followed by cooking and more cooking until the house smells absolutely divine. (It always amazes me how long it takes to prepare everything and how quick it is to eat it. Lol.) After we enjoy our meal we sit back and relax and enjoy visiting with family and friends. We eventually stuff some pie into our still full tummies and sit back again. Somewhere in between we clean up the kitchen and dining room. Our evening usually ends with us all sitting around to watch a holiday movie.

It makes me sad that Thanksgiving seems to get forgotten between Halloween and Christmas. Does anyone agree? It is a holiday in which we receive nothing but the company of family and friends. No one gives gifts or knocks on doors for candy, we just enjoy each other as we break bread and express to each other how thankful we are. I love it!!!!
I hope you had an enjoyable Thanksgiving at your home. Ours was another one I will never forget and I already can't wait for next year!!!!!!

Our Anniversary Getaway!!

My sweet hubby and I have been married for 23 years! I didn't think anyone could or would put up with me this long, but I am glad he proved me wrong. LOL
We have a tradition of taking a weekend away, just the 2 of us, for our anniversary. The tradition started when our kids were pretty young and we lived in Minnesota, much closer to family. so it was a little easier. Grandma was thrilled to come stay with her babies while we took a 2 night trip to Minneapolis. We would stay at a special hotel that had a theater which offered some hilarious plays. We would get a great package deal which included the room, play, and a meal.
When we moved to Arizona we tried to continue the tradition, but it wasn't as easy because now family is really far away. We had friends who offered one year, but I got the flu so we had to stay home. They were sweet enough to take the kids to protect them from the nasty flu germs floating around our home.
We took a couple years off from our lovely tradition to let our kiddos grow up a bit. Thankfully we were able to resume our tradition again.
For our 20th anniversary Grandma flew all the way down here to take her babies again while we went to California to relive our honeymoon at the happiest place on Earth.....Disneyland. It was a trip I will never forget!

We just got home from another relaxing anniversary weekend. Our marriage is so very important to us. We want to take care of it and nurture it. Part of that is to get time alone to be a couple, a husband and wife, not mom and dad. One day it will be just us again. Sniff Sniff. When our sweet children are all grown. I want to know my husband now, so when that time comes we don't have to look at each other like strangers saying, "now what?"
We are already planning our 25th. It is going to be bigger than the other getaways.....a milestone. I can't wait!
I wish everyone took the time to nurture their marriage. It doesn't have to cost much. A marriage relationship has the potential to grow into something so beautiful if cared for tenderly. Marriage is a major life decision and should always be treated as precious, because it is.

Here are a few photos from our weekend!!!

Did you know I do most of my photography sessions on location? We live in such a beautiful area that the backdrops are limitless. But I do have a studio as well. Unfortunately it is not big and elaborate, but it does produce some sweet photos. I have a portable backdrop that I set up in my garage. Ok, let me explain a little something here before you picture this. Lol We don't use our garage for our cars, we use it for an extra space for parties and other get togethers. We have a fridge, bar, table and chairs in there. It does have storage and gardening tools as well, so that part is a garage. When I open the big door, it allows me to get that natural light I love for my photography. I also use several digital backdrops to provide my clients the perfect photo.

Foto Tip Friday!!! Reflector in a Pinch

This week has been something else. I am so glad it was Friday! Here is your photo tip for the week.

Are you trying to stay in a photo budget like me? You want to buy all this neat stuff for taking photos but don't want to spend the money. Well, here is a neat, cheap trick you can use and you probably don't have to buy a thing.

If you haven't used a reflector than I recommend you start. Look up some different techniques on the internet. But instead of buying a genuine photography reflector, you can use the shade you have in your car that is used to keep the sun out while your car sits.
walmart.com

Now that it is Fall, it may be harder to find those shades, so here is another inexpensive option. A piece of insulation. One side is a shiny silver layer that  reflects light perfectly. Funny huh?

You would be surprised at all the neat little tricks you can find that will save you money. I will bring you more next time! So until then have a great week!

Throwback Thursday!!! The Farm

I was looking through some photos looking for a particular photo when I spotted this one. It was taken in 2015 and I had forgotten all about it. I took this up in ND at my in laws farm.
When my hubby and I first got married, he farmed with his dad. I was a city girl and let me tell you, it gave me a new respect for farmers and how long and hard they work. I still can't consider myself a country girl, but I am old fashioned and like to do things, like raising my kids, the old fashioned way. I guess that is why I like this photo so much. 👪🤠

What To Wear!!!!! Interview Outfits!

Ok, so I haven't actually gone on an interview for about 10 years, so I thought it would be neat to look and see what is trending now for interview attire. I see it hasn't changed a whole lot, but it isn't a bad idea to keep updated just in case. I hope you don't have to use this unless you choose to.

I was always told to dress for the job you are interviewing for.....as if you already have it. I guess, it depends on what you are interviewing for. I had an instance where I was interviewing at a clothing store and wore an outfit I had bought there. But the outfit was not totally appropriate for an interview and it cost me the job. It wasn't distasteful, it was just too trendy and not enough business.

Check out this article and pass it on to those you know who are looking for a job. It may be what makes the difference between getting the job and not getting the job.

Going Against the Grain

We just had a pretty unconventional event in our family. But before I tell you what it is, I want to give you a little background. I am opening up here to share a little about me.

Mark and I celebrated our 23rd anniversary. We have had an amazing marriage thanks to God bringing us together and we have kept Him a big part of our lives. It wasn't always that way though.
When we were dating we decided we wanted to live together before we were married, much to the chagrin of our parents. I wish we had waited to live together because with our decision came many times of feeling shame.
So, when our oldest daughter came to us and said she wanted to move in with her fiance', we were less than thrilled. We didn't give her a long lecture or shake our fingers at her. We simply told her she is an adult and she is old enough to make her own decisions. We reminded her how we felt and how God felt, but told her we would love her no matter what she decided. We didn't want to shame her. God isn't about shame.
What they did next surprised Mark and I! They sat down with us several weeks later and told us they wanted to get married early. They were planning to keep their original wedding date of June 30th, but wanted to sign the papers and take their vows early. Unfortunately, my first thought was not the reason they had come to this decision. So why? They said they wanted to be right before God! What!? Talk about going against the grain of society! We hadn't expected this but were very humbled they had come to this decision. They said they didn't want to feel shame for living together and knew it wasn't the way God wanted their life together to start.
Wow! We were so happy to see them make such an adult decision. As my brother put it, "They are making  a decision that puts them ahead of many couples who have been married for years."

So, on October 19th, (a Thursday) our sweet daughter married Tim through lots of tears of joy. There was just a handful of people there. Above all and most importantly, God was there and I bet He had tears of joy as well.
It was simple, sweet and only took about 15 minutes. There was not a party after. We all went our own way, but this was not for us. It was for God!

Mark and I left there feeling peace! We met a few of the people that had been around them while they made this decision. They had a mentor couple and other college age friends who had been praying for them for months before this day. We got the blessing of seeing these people love on them first hand.

I will never forget this day! God opened my eyes to see what I was not seeing in my daughter......a God fearing young lady.
We are blessed beyond measure and we know without a doubt that God is going to be with them each and every step of the way. Through good times and the bad, for richer or for poorer, in sickness and in health, and even after death parts them.

Foto Tip Friday!!! Camera Shake

We all have had those moments. It's the perfect shot. You take a photo and look at your camera to see how it came out.....Perfect!!! Woo Hoo!!!!!  Next you upload it to your computer. You can't wait to share it. You are so proud of yourself, but wait......there it is on your computer screen and it doesn't look like you thought. It has blur from Camera Shake!!!! Ahhhhh!

How do you avoid this? Well, here are a few tips.

  1. Use a tripod. I know we don't carry our tripod everywhere we go, but this is the simplest and most obvious way to avoid motion blur. If you don't have a tripod, brace yourself against a solid object like a wall or tree for extra stability.
  2. Be sure to hold your camera properly. You should have one hand on the body and one hand on the lens.
  3. Use your Noise Reduction or Stabilization option in your cameras menu. This doesn't prevent all blur, but it helps.
  4. Use the correct shutter speed. The rule of thumb is to shoot at a shutter speed faster then your focal length. (ie. focal length of 35 mm = shutter speed no slower than 1/35th of a second)

What A Night!!!!

Have you ever had those days where things go well and the day is pretty uneventful until........! I was having an amazing day. Work went well. I was getting the house to myself to get caught up on some photos, housework, and most importantly, to pack for my anniversary weekend getaway with Mark. Then it happened!!! Again!!! For the 4th time!!!!!!

Image result for pepe le pewI opened the door to let our sweet dog, Annie outside. And there eating her food was a dreaded skunk. Right there by the door. I called Annie back into the house but it was too late. I heard the spray! I smelled the smell! I had no choice but to keep my dog, who now smelled like a cross between burnt garlic and burnt popcorn, in my house until the wretched animal left my yard. It seemed like hours!!!!

Finally, it was no where to be found. I forgot to mention I had clothes on my clothesline as well. So, here I am, sneaking out into my yard, like a ninja. I took a few steps and then stopped, looked around and took a few more. When it was apparent it was safe, I got my clothes and went back inside. I let Annie outside and began to try to scrub and air out my house. By now, my eyes and nose were stinging. Sigh!!!!

My sweet man stopped and bought some deskunk shampoo. He is now fighting with poor Annie to give her a much needed bath!!!!!

I sit now, trying to settle myself down. I am considering a glass of wine to help the process along. The good news is, I did get packed and got a little bit of work done on photos. Oh, and my clothes that were on the line smell just fine. I guess that is the silver lining.

White After Labor Day?

I look in my closet to pick something to wear for church and find myself passing by the white clothing for fear that the old adage of "no white after Labor Day" still stands. Well, I decided to do some digging and apparently it is not so true any longer. According to People magazine, the wearing of white before Labor Day may have originated in the 20's. White was worn in the Summer because it was cooler than darker colors. White was then replaced by darker colors after August because the weather began to get cooler.

To read more check out this link. Then you decide if you are going to pass by white in your closet. I don't think I will any longer.

Throwback Thursday!!!

I can't believe it has already been 3 years ago. For our 20th wedding anniversary we went to Disneyland for a couple days. It was so fun to go just us and no kids. It gave us the opportunity to be kids again. I think it is time to go back. Anyone wanna come too?

My hubby and I love to keep memories alive and make new memories too. For our honeymoon we went to Disneyland, Universal Studios (when Back to the Future was big), San Diego Zoo, and Sea World. I hadn't been to any of these places before so it was a real treat for me.

We are planning our 25th anniversary in a couple years. This time we want to go somewhere outside the country and tropical.

This year is our 23rd anniversary. It is less than a month away. For this anniversary we are going to stay at our time share for a few days. I love time alone with my man. He really is my best friend!

What do you do for your anniversary? Do you have special traditions? I would love to hear about it.

Foto Tip Friday!!!! Flash Compensation

Thank Goodness It's Friday! I have had a very busy week. I don't know about you, but I am wiped out this week. That is why my foto tip is not on video. I wanted to get it out on time and doing a video wasn't going to happen. I am looking forward to a quiet weekend to catch up and breath before I start another week.

My foto tip this week is about flash compensation. Whether you use an on camera or off camera flash, it is very important to know how to adjust for different levels of light coming from your flash. Practice changing levels and see what you like. What looks the most natural? If you have an off camera flash try bouncing the light off the ceiling or wall so it will be less harsh. It sure makes a difference when your lighting is right.

Here is a perfect example of using flash wrong. I am so embarrassed to show this photo, but here goes. This is my sweet son about 4 years ago. Notice the shadow behind him? I now know that if I had bounced my flash it would not have done this and would have been more natural. Also, I should have had my son step away from the backdrop a little and used less flash. That could have eliminated the shadow as well.

If you are not sure how to adjust your flash than ...... you know what I am going to say, don't you? Get your users manual and do some studying up on it. I can't say that enough. Lol

Have fun practicing and Happy Clicking!
